XP Pale Ale September 6, 2010
Overall Rating

6 November 2009 Style: 10A American Pale Ale Aroma: moderate fresh, earthy hops, citrusy. moderate fruity esters, pretty much no malt. A hint of grassiness maybe. 10/12 Appearance: amber. vibrant tan head with excellent retention. nice lacing. perhaps a bit too much head - highly carbonated. 3/3 Flavor: strong, unique hop flavor. citrusy and fresh; they must use something different. Moderate bitterness and clean, subdued malt put the emphasis on the hop flavor. Fruity esters. Dry finish. Hop flavor lingers on the backend with subdued bitterness. A touch of some specialty malt comes in too. 18/20 Mouthfeel: medium bodied with high carbonation. perhaps too high? loud when opening and the beer almost foamed at just resting in the open bottle. effervescent from the high carbonation. That said, the high carbanation lends itself well to the freshness of the hop flavor. 4/5 Overall. very unique and interesting. the hop flavor takes the lead but is supported well by the bitterness and malt. 9/10 44/50

Obovoid Oak-Aged Oatmeal Stout September 6, 2010
Overall Rating

10 November 2009 Style: Mix of 13F Russian Imperial Stout and 13C Oatmeal Stout Aroma: roasted grain, could be a touch stronger. coffee and chocolate. hint of sweet maltiness. hint of oak. a touch of alcohol 10/12 Appearance: deep, dark brown. almost black. dense. nice tan head, great retention. and lacing as an oatmeal stout should have 3/3 Flavor: moderate to moderate-high sweetness. nuttiness from the oats. roasted barley and oats provide a rich, dark nutiness. chocolate. moderately sweet finish. moderate-low bitterness that supports but doesn't take the lead or linger. aftertaste is roasty, nutty, and sweet. a bit of alcohol. a bit of oak. 18/20 Mouthfeel: medium-full body. Maybe a bit light and less chewy than expected for an oatmeal stout, but it is imperial so that might be why. moderate-high carbonation that is hidden a bit by the alcohol and oak. creamy and smooth. 4/5 Overall: good oatmeal stout. creamy, nutty, and roasty with a full head. a touch of oak that works well together with the alcohol flavors. The only problem with this beer is that the packaging lies. It is very much an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, but nowhere on the bottle does it state "Imperial" or the fact that the beer is 8% ABV. 8/10 43/50

Maple Nut Brown Ale September 6, 2010
Overall Rating

Good flavor. The maple works well with the nut brown, but the carbonation was really too low.
