Impressive head retention and carbonation for a 10% beer. Great beer.

Poured into a snifter. Batch 76, which I believe is a 2010 vintage. 2.0 A: Dark brown color. No head at all. None. Not surprised, but disappointed nonetheless. 3.5 S: Loads of tobacco and raisin. Date, fig, and prune after that. Sweet toffee and caramel. Minor notes of oxidation. This smells pretty good despite no carbonation. It'd proabably be amazing with some. 3.5 T: Tobacco and rum raisin kick this off. Dates, figs, prunes, toffee, and plenty of caramel. Basically the same as the nose. Again, some sherry-like oxidation. Same as the nose. Would be much tastier with carbonation. 1.5 M: Heavier medium body. Not fully flat, but whatever is the lowest detectable amount In any case, it ruins whatever creaminess this had in store. 2.5 D: I think this could be a damn good beer if it was allowed to be. As it stands, it's at the lower end of average. With carbonation, I could see this easily breaking the 4s. But, I won't know tonight. I've been having nothing been trouble with b-wines from the cellar and their carbonation lately. It's starting to grow tiresome. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-22-2012 05:49:35

This is a very interesting and complex beer. The warmer it gets, the more interesting the flavors and intensity. Definitely a sipping beer. It pours a dark rich bronze from the bottle with a thick, dense head. The aroma is overwhelming with molasses, fruits and chocolate. The flavor is equally complex with the barley flavor becoming evident and the alcohol quite obvious in the mouth. Flavors of dates, figs and tobacco are present throughout. Probably not one for the masses.

A complex beer oozing character: malts, chocolate, cherries immediately come to mind. Love this beer, and will pair it with dark chocolate.

A: Pours an extremely dark ruby red that appears almost black. Over 3 fingers of creamy, tan head explodes over the snifter and dissipates slowly leaving behind thick, beautiful lacing. N: Fig, dates, leather, molasses, tobacco, red grapes, plum and hints of cherry and cocoa. T: Red grapes, raisin, dates, plum and tobacco upfront. This is followed by molasses, leather, roasted barley, fig and some oak. Finishes with huge fig notes, dark chocolate, and hints of leather. Very light citrus and fruity esters make an appearance throughout. M: Medium bodied, creamy, soft, sticky, dry and bitter. O: This is one robust beauty! Dead on for a fantastic Old Ale. Huge dark fruit, leather, tobacco and molasses notes throughout. I can't even imagine what some cellaring would do to this. Alcohol is not detectable. EXCELLENT!

This beer blew me away. It's like an old ale with deeper flavors. A dark pour, creamy head. Complex aroma of dark plum, leather, caramel, cocoa, toasted bread, molasses. Flavors include the above. Very easy drinking. I've found my favorite

Heavy Molasses, Fig, Tobacco, with a slight smoked taste. Light oak flavor. Good barley wine, so much caramelized grain flavor it's a slight roasty note from being a Russian Imperial. Not my favorite HOTD beer, but enjoyable none the less. It will knock you on your ass!

Barleywines are not really my thing, so i cannot say very happy things most of the time about them. But this one was actually pretty good.
